This week was about catching up with an old friend Quokka while visiting Western Australia.
The city of Perth is all about lifestyle. If you like a relaxed pace, great cafes, top restaurants, outdoor activities, and beaches on your doorstep, then you will be happy in Perth. The weather in Perth is generally warm all year round which supports being outside and enjoying the sunshine (although it can get a bit intense during the summer months).
Highlights include the massive Kings Park (a huge expanse of parklands and native bush), the port of Fremantle (great markets), or a day trip to the unique Rottnest Island for cycling, swimming, and quokka spotting (a small native marsupial).
This region is well known for its wine, and the Swan Valley is easily accessible from Perth - a perfect day trip for some wine tasting and good food.
Perth is blessed with a variety of beaches to choose from - Cottesloe is one of the most popular, Scarborough Beach tends to attract a younger crowd, and City Beach is also attractive. Sightings of large sharks are quite common off these beaches so keep an ear out for shark alert sirens.
While there is some public transport in Perth you will find it easiest to get around if you hire a car.
The GLBT community is fairly small in Perth, but it is active and the city is fairly welcoming on the whole. GLBT venues such as The Court Hotel and Connections Nightclub are reliable favourites. There are two online GLBT publications with local news and events - Perth Gay News, and Out in Perth.
The annual LGBT pride celebration is known as Pridefest and it is held over two weeks in November each year. The festival features a diverse range of arts and culture events as well as a Pride March.
There is a lot to discover in the sunny city of Perth.
